Join us for a special screening of the powerful documentary Allowed to Birth on
Tuesday, 15 September at 6:30pm.
At Forum 6 Cinemas Tamworth, located in Centrepoint, Peel Street, Tamworth NSW, Australia.
This thought-provoking film shines a light on the experiences of birth, autonomy, informed choice, and the maternity system. Whether you’re expecting a baby, supporting families, or simply passionate about improving birth experiences, this is an evening not to be missed.
I can’t wait to share this important documentary with our community and continue the conversations that matter.
Synopsis
Across cultures and continents, birth is both a universal experience and a deeply personal journey, yet for millions it has become increasingly shaped by systems of control, risk, and intervention.
This documentary explores the global landscape of childbirth, revealing the growing maternal health crisis and the profound impact of the medicalisation of birth.
Through intimate stories and cross-cultural perspectives, the film examines how modern obstetric practices (while often lifesaving) have transformed a natural process into a highly managed medical event. It questions whether this shift has always served mothers and babies, or if it has, in some cases, distanced them from safer, more holistic care.
At the heart of the film is the life and work of midwife and educator Kristine Lauria, whose approach offers a powerful alternative. Grounded in respect, physiology, and evidence-based care, her work challenges conventional models and reimagines what childbirth can look like when autonomy, trust, and continuity of care are prioritised.
By weaving together global insights with one woman's mission, the documentary invites audiences to reconsider how we bring life into the world, and what it would take to make birth safer, more humane, and more empowering for all.
Content Note: This film is not intended for children under 13. It contains discussions of sexual abuse and includes mild nudity in the context of childbirth and human anatomy.
“Women don’t need to be taught how to
give birth.
They need to be trusted, supported, and allowed to birth.”
Why I’m Hosting a Screening of Allowed to Birth
As a private midwife, I have the privilege of walking alongside women and families during some of the most transformative moments of their lives. Every day, I witness the power, strength, and wisdom that women bring to birth, and I also see the challenges many face when navigating maternity care systems.
That is why I am honoured to host a screening of Allowed to Birth.
This powerful documentary shines a light on the importance of informed choice, autonomy, continuity of care, and respectful maternity care. It invites us to reflect on what truly matters in childbirth and to consider how we can better support women to birth safely, confidently, and with dignity.
This screening is not about telling women how they should birth. It is about creating space for meaningful conversations, sharing diverse perspectives, and empowering families with information so they can make the choices that are right for them.
Whether you are planning a pregnancy, currently expecting a baby, work within maternity care, or simply have an interest in birth, I invite you to join us for this important and thought-provoking event. Together, we can celebrate the value of woman-centred care and continue the conversation about what it means to support women to birth with trust, respect, and autonomy.
I look forward to sharing this evening with our community and fostering discussion about how we can create a future where every woman feels informed, supported, and truly heard throughout her birth journey.
